Boreal passerines and woodpeckers
Eastern Finland is a really special area. It lies just in the westernmost edge of breeding ranges of many eastern passerines that are considered as rarities elsewhere in Western Europe. Species like Red-flanked Bluetail, Siberian Jay, Pine Grosbeak, Two-barred Crossbill, Blyth's Reed Warbler, Booted Warbler, Arctic Warbler, Greenish Warbler, Siberian Tit, Rustic Bunting and Little Bunting are all breeding in Finland.
Many of our eastern specialities are scarce and can be found only from certain habitats. Many years of breeding bird surveys, bird ringing projects and photographing birds in Eastern and Northern Finland have provided our guides with the best knowledge of localities for these interesting species.
The numbers of eastern passerines do not fluctuate annually as much as those of owls, so nearly all the species mentioned can be found with us every summer.
Woodpeckers are also really forest-dependent birds. We have a great variety of them and almost all the species can be found from southern Finland. The main targets for foreign birders are White-backed, Three-toed and Grey-headed Woodpeckers. We have localities for them in many parts of Finland so they are quite easy to include in a tour. Also the other species of woodpeckers can be easily found with us.
